Pokémon TCG has been running for decades, and its release structure can look confusing at first. Once you understand the levels of the structure, navigating any language market - and any wholesale catalog - becomes straightforward.
The structure, from top to bottom
- Generations - The game advances in generations tied to the video games (for example the current Mega Evolution and Scarlet & Violet eras). Each generation brings new mechanics and a new visual identity.
- Series / blocks - Within a generation, products are grouped into series with shared themes (for example the Chinese numbered booster line, the Japanese M-series, or the English Scarlet & Violet line).
- Expansions / sets - The individual card sets within a series (for example Chinese 18.0 Chasing Glory, Japanese M6 Storm Emeralda, English Surging Sparks).
- Product lines / formats - How a set is packaged: booster boxes, special sets, collection boxes, starter decks, Elite Trainer Boxes and so on.
How naming differs by market
- Chinese market - Uses a numbered system: main expansions (1.0, 2.0 ... 18.0) plus .5 special releases, alongside named special series like Gem Pack and Pokémon 151C.
- Japanese market - Uses generation prefixes (SV for Scarlet & Violet, M for the Mega Evolution era) combined with set codes and names.
- English market - Uses the generation name plus a set subtitle (for example Scarlet & Violet - Surging Sparks).
Why this matters for buyers
Understanding the structure helps you:
- Compare the same set across languages (the 151 theme exists in Chinese, Japanese and English releases).
- Forecast demand - new generations bring new mechanics that drive first-release demand.
- Communicate precisely with suppliers - naming the generation, series and format removes ambiguity from quotations.
When contacting us, the simplest formula is: language + set + product type + quantity (for example "Japanese M6 Storm Emeralda booster boxes, 10 boxes").
